For those very difficult micro-drilling applications requiring
close tolerances on hole diameters, straightness,
roundness and concentricity, the Levin Micro-Drilling
Machine offers the best solution. It is an exceptionally
accurate and sensitive machine constructed with special
features to enable production drilling of small holes from
1/8" diameter down to sizes below .004" diameter.
In drilling materials which work-harden easily, these
machines produce spectacular results which are just
not possible on conventional drilling equipment or on
machines which do not revolve both the drill and the work.
Sensitive enough for use with our smallest Micro-Drills,
the unique feed and alignment system, coupled with
Levin Precision Collets and work-holding devices, makes
the machine ideally suited for drilling miniature precision
orifices, nozzles, bushings and a wide variety of instrument
and electronic parts. An equally important use for
such machines is second-operation drilling of small
holes where the hole cannot be properly drilled initially.
Second-operation drilling nearly always produces a
better hole faster than it can be done initially, and this
is especially true with long holes.

HEADSTOCK
- The headstock is fully enclosed
with special precision preloaded angular contact ball
bearings. The front bearings consist of a preloaded
pair of angular contact bearings with a single radial
bearing in the rear. The spindle is fully hardened from
end to end. On headstocks using Type 3C collets, the
headstock is furnished with a special adapter and
drawbar assembly which enables one to use the more
accurate and sensitive Type D collets for holding work
under 8.0 MM diameter.
|
MICRO-DRILLING
UNIT -For the most precise drilling
of small holes, it is essential that both the work and drill
revolve, and that the drill axis be absolutely coincident
with the axis of rotation of the work. By means of two
adjusting slides, the axis of the drilling spindle can be
quickly aligned with the headstock. The feed is accomplished
by rotating the handwheel on the feed screw while
maintaining pressure on the slide handle. This arrangement
enables one to drill without forcing the drill since
the drill cannot be advanced any faster than the hand-
wheel is turned. Rapid drill withdrawal and return is
controlled with the slide handle and the mechanism
prevents the drill from striking the bottom of the hole.
|
LATHE BED -
he lathe bed is cast from Meehanite
and has fully ground precision ways. It has an overall
length of 18-3/4" and is furnished complete with a T-Bolt,
Nut and Collar assembly for attaching tooling. Pedestals
are integrally cast with the bed and a T-slot is provided
throughout the length of the bed ways.

AUXILIARY
DRIVE - An auxiliary drive unit is included
as standard equipment on all models. On machines
supplied with either a Formica-top Steel Bench or a
Welded Steel Cabinet, these 1/8 HP variable speed
drives operate the Micro-Drilling Unit simultaneously
with and independently from the main 1/3 HP spindle
drive. On machines supplied without a bench or cabinet,
the auxiliary drive is supplied with a double-ended motor
which can be used to drive both the headstock and the
drilling spindle. All drive units are foot switch operated,
provide 0 to 5000 RPM on the drilling spindle, have
dynamic braking, and operate off a 115 V, 60 Hz, 1 Ph AC
circuit. Each model machine has a built-in switch circuit,
factory-wired to accept a Levin Coolant System which
will operate simultaneously with the spindle drives.
|
MOTOR
DRIVE UNITS -
Three standard drives are
available for these lathes. A separate 1/8 HP variable
speed drive is available for a rear bench top mounting
configuration where high torque is not essential. Lathes
furnished on Formica-top steel benches and lathes furnished
on steel cabinets are supplied complete with a
1/3 HP SCR drive having IR drop compensation. All
drive units provide infinitely variable spindle speeds from
0 to 5000 RPM with dynamic braking, foot switch start
and stop, and full overload protection for use on 115 V,
60 Hz, 1 Ph AC electrical service.
|
CHIP TRAY -
A Stainless Steel chip tray with
coolant drain is included with all bench-mounted lathes,
and is available at extra cost for lathes ordered
without a bench or cabinet.
|
COOLANT
SYSTEM -
A coolant system is included
with all models of micro drilling machines except those
not including either a bench or cabinet. An independent
control switch on the control unit permits simultaneous
operation of the lathe and coolant system when the foot
switch is depressed. An optional coolant system is avail-
able for all other machines.
|
CABINET -
The cabinet provides the best possible
support for the Micro-Drilling Machine. Convenient access to
all storage compartments has been provided with doors
at the front and rear of the cabinet. The entire coolant
system can easily be removed for thorough cleaning
whenever required. All necessary wiring for both the
coolant system and drive control are included with all
machines on a cabinet.
